Everywhere and in every way, most excellent Felix, we acknowledge this with profound gratitude. But in order not to weary you further, I would request that you be kind enough to hear us briefly. 5우리가 보니 이 사람은 염병이라 천하에 퍼진 유대인을 다 소요케 하는 자요 나사렛 이단의 괴수라 "We have found this man to be a troublemaker, stirring up riots among the Jews all over the world. He is a ringleader of the Nazarene sect 6저가 또 성전을 더럽게 하려 하므로 우리가 잡았사오니 and even tried to desecrate the temple; so we seized him. 7당신이 친히 그를 심문하시면 By examining him yourself 8우리의 송사하는 이 모든 일을 아실 수 있나이다 하니 you will be able to learn the truth about all these charges we are bringing against him." 9유대인들도 이에 참가하여 이 말이 옳다 주장하니라 The Jews joined in the accusation, asserting that these things were true.
But when the son of Paul's sister heard of this plot, he went into the barracks and told Paul. Then Paul called one of the centurions and said, "Take this young man to the commander; he has something to tell him." 18천부장에게로 데리고 가서 가로되 죄수 바울이 나를 불러 이 청년이 당신께 할 말이 있다 하여 데리고 가기를 청하더이다 하매 So he took him to the commander. The centurion said, "Paul, the prisoner, sent for me and asked me to bring this young man to you because he has something to tell you." 19천부장이 그 손을 잡고 물러가서 종용히 묻되 내게 할 말이 무엇이냐? The commander took the young man by the hand, drew him aside and asked, "What is it you want to tell me?" 20대답하되 유대인들이 공모하기를 저희들이 바울에 대하여 더 자세한 것을 묻기 위함이라 하고 내일 그를 데리고 공회로 내려오기를 당신께 청하자 하였으니 He said: "The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul before the Sanhedrin tomorrow on the pretext of wanting more accurate information about him. Don't give in to them, because more than forty of them are waiting in ambush for him. They have taken an oath not to eat or drink until they have killed him. They are ready now, waiting for your consent to their request." 22이에 천부장이 청년을 보내며 경계하되 이 일을 내게 고하였다고 아무에게도 이르지 말라 하고 The commander dismissed the young man and cautioned him, "Don't tell anyone that you have reported this to me." 23백부장 둘을 불러 이르되 밤 제 삼 시에 가이사랴까지 갈 보병 이백 명과 마병 칠십 명과 창군 이백 명을 준비하라 하고 Then he called two of his centurions and ordered them, "Get ready a detachment of two hundred soldiers, seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen to go to Caesarea at nine tonight. Provide mounts for Paul so that he may be taken safely to Governor Felix."
The crowd listened to Paul until he said this. Then they raised their voices and shouted, "Rid the earth of him! He's not fit to live!" 23떠들며 옷을 벗어 던지고 티끌을 공중에 날리니 As they were shouting and throwing off their cloaks and flinging dust into the air, 24천부장이 바울을 영문 안으로 데려가라 명하고 저희가 무슨 일로 그를 대하여 떠드나 알고자 하여 채찍질하며 신문하라 한대 the commander ordered Paul to be taken into the barracks. He directed that he be flogged and questioned in order to find out why the people were shouting at him like this. As they stretched him out to flog him, Paul said to the centurion standing there, "Is it legal for you to flog a Roman citizen who hasn't even been found guilty?" 26백부장이 듣고 가서 천부장에게 전하여 가로되 어찌하려 하느뇨 이는 로마 사람이라 하니 When the centurion heard this, he went to the commander and reported it. "What are you going to do?" he asked. "This man is a Roman citizen." 27천부장이 와서 바울에게 말하되 네가 로마 사람이냐 내게 말하라 가로되 그러하다 The commander went to Paul and asked, "Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?" "Yes, I am," he answered. Then the commander said, "I had to pay a big price for my citizenship." "But I was born a citizen," Paul replied. Those who were about to question him withdrew immediately. The commander himself was alarmed when he realized that he had put Paul, a Roman citizen, in chains.
When we arrived at Jerusalem, the brothers received us warmly. The next day Paul and the rest of us went to see James, and all the elders were present. Paul greeted them and reported in detail what <God had done> among the Gentiles through his ministry. When they heard this, they praised God. Then they said to Paul: "You see, brother, how many thousands of Jews have believed, and all of them are zealous for the law. They have been informed that you teach all the Jews who live among the Gentiles to turn away from Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children or live according to our customs. What shall we do? They will certainly hear that you have come, 23우리의 말하는 이대로 하라 서원한 네 사람이 우리에게 있으니 so do what we tell you. There are four men with us who have made a vow. Take these men, join in their purification rites and pay their expenses, so that they can have their heads shaved. Then everybody will know there is no truth in these reports about you, but that you yourself are living in obedience to the law. As for the Gentile believers, we have written to them our decision that they should abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality." 26바울이 이 사람들을 데리고 이튿날 저희와 함께 결례를 행하고 성전에 들어가서 각 사람을 위하여 제사 드릴 때까지의 결례의 만기 된 것을 고하니라 The next day Paul took the men and purified himself along with them. Then he went to the temple to give notice of the date when the days of purification would end and the offering would be made for each of them. |
